Home prices: Biggest rise since housing bubble

Home prices continued their recovery, rising 8.1% in January, although a separate report showed a slight slowdown in new-home sales.

The S&P Case-Shiller index, which tracks the 20 largest markets in the nation, showed the biggest year-over-year gain in prices since June 2006.

If projections hold out, home values will rise 22 percent cumulatively by the end of 2017, according to Zillow’s first-quarter Home Price Expectations Survey.

For its report, Zillow and Pulsenomics surveyed a nationwide panel of 118 economists, real estate experts, and investment and market strategists to get their thoughts on future home values and housing market policies.

New-home sales hit highest level in more than four years

WASHINGTON -- U.S. new-home sales jumped in January from the previous month to the highest level since July 2008, a sign that the housing recovery is accelerating.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that new-home sales rose nearly 16 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 437,000. The percentage increase was the largest in nearly 20 years. And December's sales were revised higher to 378,000 from 369,000.

Housing values soar 11 percent in South Florida

Housing values in South Florida are rising faster than they have since 2006, a time when the real estate boom was just beginning to lose some steam.

The closely watched Case-Shiller real estate index jumped 11 percent in December compared to the prior year, the biggest spike since August 2006. And while the index puts home values back to where they were in the summer of 2003, this is the 13th straight month of consecutive gains on the Case-Shiller scorecard.
